Scott Free – “Songs to Fight Oppression”
Scott Free has been composing and performing music for decades. He was inducted into the City of Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 2010 for his political work. Scott runs a queer Indie Radio Station Alt Q Radio. The new record Songs to Fight Oppression is a collection of protest songs. If you’ve protested in the US in the last 3 decades, some of these will be familiar to you.
Singing or chanting in protest is as old as protest itself. Singing as a group is uplifting and creates connection in the group. Affirming clear messages of intent, communicating with passers by and with The Powers That Be is part of the reason for protest. On this record the chants have been fleshed out with instruments and choral arrangements. Next time you’re protesting in the street, bring these chants with you!
