Mike Mullins “8-String Sketches” / Karen Turner “Tonight There Might Be Stars”
Mike Mullins has been playing music since childhood. He’s played guitar on over 100 records but his true musical love is the mandolin, so he’s just released a record of just mandolin music 8-String Sketches. Reinventing familiar tunes for the mandolin, Mike takes us on a light journey. The mandolin lends itself to variations in melody and textures that are specifically mando. Mike tells us some of his story and we get to hear some of the new record.
Karen Turner’s debut EP Tonight There Might Be Stars offers five songs that are personal and nuanced. Karen has been singing since childhood and in recent years has been especially focused on songwriting, working on her craft, developing her process. Karen describes some of her songwriting process, and we’ll listen to some of the new EP.

Mike’s and Karen’s stories demonstrate the importance of embracing your musical passion, following through and giving yourself permission to share the magic with all of us. Great artistry and creativity can take time to develop.
My musician friends and I have been enjoying Mike play locally for many years. Lovely to hear his beautiful solo work on the mandolin. Agree that he has an “orchestral” quality to his work.
